The Student Support Team Process
Student Support Team (SST) is a committee of teachers, specialists, and school administration in each of our school buildings whose role is to review the performance data and teacher observations for students for whom teachers have concerns.
Teachers with concerns about students’ progress are required to document evidence of the concern in student work, tests, observation records, or other reports. The teacher is also required to document all strategies attempted to address the concern, as well as the outcome of each strategy. Teachers also document parent contact and collaboration with other teachers to find possible strategies to address the issue.
The teacher brings the documentation to the SST meeting, and the team asks questions and makes recommendations for further intervention, as appropriate. This may mean new strategies for the teacher to try, or referral for RTI supports (see above). If a student has received RTI support and has not made effective progress within a specified period of time, the SST can refer the student for a Special Education evaluation in the area/s of suspected disability.
Parents who have concerns about their child’s academic, socio-emotional, or behavioral progress should discuss the concern with the teacher and make a mutual decision whether a referral to SST is the appropriate next step.
Sometimes, parents may wish to have their child evaluated for Special Education services right away upon noticing an area of concern. We strongly recommend using the SST process before seeking an immediate Special Education evaluation for the child. Special Education is intended to minimize the impact of an identified disability while maximizing access to the general curriculum. Often, a student’s difficulties are not because of a disability, but because the student needs additional instruction to fill skill or knowledge gaps to meet grade-level expectations.
Parents are notified when their child is referred to SST and may attend the SST meeting where their child is presented. We also provide a letter stating the outcomes of the meeting for parents’ records.
